“The Emperor has no Clothes”
The downgrading of the status of Mayor of Clonmel was highlighted again by Cllr Niall Dennehy at the Clonmel Borough District AGM.
Cllr Dennehy hit out at what he sees as a degradation to the office of mayor stating that the local authority in the town of Clonmel is now only a ‘sub-committee’ of the county council since Clonmel Corporation was abolished.

Speaking to The Premier immediately after the Annual General Meeting, Cllr Dennehy said the ‘sub-committee’ is not a legal entity in its own right. “This cannot just be a populist, popular academic gesture. It must be matched with action.”
Masquerading
“Masquerading as Mayor of Clonmel where no such office of mayoralty exists anymore does nothing more than play into the hands of those who would have us believe that all is well in Clonmel. All is not well in Clonmel.
“In fact, the town has surrendered control to date of €330m in current account and capital accounts to Nenagh since the hostile corporate takeover of 2013/2014.
“Former real Mayoralty Mayors such as Matt Slater would turn in their graves at the blatant masquerading and misrepresentation of the former mayoralty and it’s insignia chains by this 5 to 1 lollipop committee.
“Any masquerading Mayor, with no Mayoralty, is likened to the Hans Christian Anderson’s parable; The Emperor has no clothes,” stated Cllr Dennehy.
